Campout cancelled

We had to cancel the campout scheduled for this weekend.    Don't miss the next one in April!    Save the date.

Scouts started new spring Merit Badges Cooking and Family Life.    Make sure you print out your packets.    Cooking MB should work on #2, and Family Life should work on the Chore and Family Project ideas.

 

Next week we will not be having a Troop meeting on Wednesday, but will be having a special Scout leader training for any Scout with a leadership position including:

SPL Nate,  ASPL Hunter and Sam,  PL  Advik and Ani,  APL Keshav and James, Scribe Bhadra, and Historian Aarya.

We'll meet Wed 3/19  from 6:30 to 9:00PM in the Church basement.    See you then - Everyone else has the week off.

 

Our next Troop meeting will be our Outdoor meeting on Sunday 3/23 from 3-4:15 PM in a nearby park to be announced.   Stay tuned for details.

The following Wednesday 3/26 is our rain date for Sunday, otherwise we will not be meeting.

Summer Camp is 06/29!

It’s time to think about ….    Summer camp!       Don’t miss out on an amazing week of Scouting!     Scouts who attend summer camp are more likely to remain in the Scouting program and have an amazing experience they’ll remember for a lifetime.
 
 
Troop 186 will be going to Camp June Norcross Webster for a week of camp from Sunday 06/29/25 -  Friday 7/4/2025.  Save the date.
 
Camp calls this “week #2” and it’s the week where we’ve had the best experiences.    Because of the holiday, the camp is less crowded and we end up with smaller classes for the Scouts.
 
The cost for the week is $550  (Early Bird Fee with our Save-A-Spot discount)   if paid to us by April 25 to give us a few days to get it into their system.  Pay through our Troop website, or make a check payable to “Troop 186” and bring to a Troop meeting.   We will sign you up so we’re all together as one contingent and your payment to us goes straight through to Council.    Don’t sign up or pay directly through Council.    
 
The Connecticut Rivers Council will continue to award camperships to assist Scouts who need funds to attend camp and might not otherwise do so.   Let us know if you fall into that category and we can help.

Make sure Scouts and Adults get their medical checkup within one year of camp and have the Drs office fill out their part of the health form.    We’ll be collecting Health Forms,  Merit Badge selections, and other special selections between now and camp.
 
We need Adult campers, too!

  • 04/25  Deadline to pay $560 for the Early Bird Discount.

  • TBA   Pre-Camp parent meeting during one of our Troop meetings for Q&A.
  • TBA   Pre-Camp meeting at camp to drop off medical forms and select program elements.

New Scout Leaders

We had Troop elections tonight with two Scouts running for Senior Patrol Leader (SPL), and 5 Scouts running for Patrol Leader.   They gave some really nice speeches and the Scouts voted.

Our new SPL is Nate.   And his two Assistant SPLs (ASPL)  are Sam and Hunter.

Our new Patrol Leaders are Ani and Advik.

Keshav and James will be joining their Patrols as Assistant Patrol Leaders.

Congratulations to our new Scout leadership!

We'll be rebalancing the Patrols.    Until after our Campout, the leadership and Patrols will remain the same, and then we will not have a Troop meeting on 3/19, but instead will have a special Scout Leader training for the new leadership where they will have their first Patrol Leaders Council meeting.   At that point, they will be running our Troop.     Every Troop deserves trained leaders.

At our 3/12 Troop Meeting, we'll finalize our campout plans, and start working on our new Spring Merit Badges:    Cooking MB and Family Life MB.    They are both Eagle required.

Elections. RSVP for March Camping Trip.

Tonight is elections!     If you’re running for a Senior Patrol Leader or Patrol Leader, think about what you’d like to say to the troop.
 
It is the first of the month, so wear your Class A uniforms.
 
We’re planning to go cabin camping March 14 - 16 at Camp Workcoeman.   We’ll also be bringing tents in case the weather cooperates, so Scouts can get more tent camping nights towards rank and Camping Merit Badge.

I just got an update - The Scout Shop that was in East Hartford has been closed, and the new one in Hartford has still not been opened.    There is currently no date for when it will be open, but Scout shops at the camps are open during limited hours.   If you’re interested in visiting one, I recommend emailing or calling first to confirm their hours.

Elections next week

We had a nice Troop meeting tonight with another Patrol challenge, and work on partial Merit Badges.   If you have items to finish up for any Merit Badge, keep working on them and let your Counselor know.

Next week is our Troop elections.   Scouts will elect our next Senior Patrol Leader, then elect our next Patrol Leaders.   We'll also be rebalancing our Patrols.   If you want to run for a position, you must be at least 1st Class to run for SPL and at least 2nd Class to run for PL.  If you're interested in running for a position, you should plan to give a brief speech to the Troop.      

We'll also be doing meal planning for our March campout.    Details to be announced.

The Otis Ridge ski trip and campout was a  success.   Great lodge, food, skiing, cardboard box race, and Snow Sports Merit Badge.  Let your Patrol Leader know if you're interested in more skiing or other run winter activities!

We had a productive Troop Meeting tonight.    Rank advancements, two Scouts ranked up - congrats to Bhadra and Advik, and a fun Patrol challenge.

There is a PLC meeting this Sunday evening at a location TBA.    They will be planning our next months activities including the March campout from 3/14 - 3/16.   Reserve the date, and stay tuned for more details.
